Here is the compatibility gotcha: Craftsman-branded doors built between 2005 and 2012 sometimes used a .243 wire diameter spring that sits between standard .250 and .237 sizes. A shop that guesses will install a spring that cycles out early or puts uneven load on the cables. We measure on-site with calipers. Signs Your Craftsman Torsion Spring Replacement Is Failing

• The door opens a few inches and reverses. The opener’s force sensor detects the extra load because the spring has lost tension. On a Craftsman system with a chain-drive opener, this often happens after 8,000-10,000 cycles in New Braunfels heat.

DIY or Call Us?

There is a safe middle ground. You can verify the model number on the door label, usually on the interior side panel, and you can look at the spring for a visible gap. You can test the door balance by pulling the red release handle and lifting manually. If it feels like a loaded barbell, the spring is the problem.

What you should not do: unwind a loaded torsion spring with winding bars from the hardware store. The torque stored in a standard 16-foot door spring can cause serious injury or worse. The tools are simple. The physics are not. We have seen bent winding bars, broken wrists, and doors that came off the tracks because a spring let go at the wrong angle.
